Abstract Introduction Traumatic anterior instability of the shoulder is a common condition associated with a high recurrence rate in young adults. Clinicians, therefore, have been trying to find a technically simple, highly effective, reproducible procedure for recurrent anterior shoulder instability. The arthroscopic treatment of glenohumeral instability is becoming increasingly accepted as a viable treatment option. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the accuracy of arthroscopic techniques comparing them with the open surgical procedures, and to find out whether there are absolute contraindications for arthroscopic techniques. We conducted a critical review of recently published relevant literature. Discussion Arthroscopic stabilization has become the panacea for traumatic shoulder instability due to the escalating advances in surgical techniques and technology. In comparison with open techniques, arthroscopic procedures have the advantages of decreased morbidity rate, early functional rehabilitation and improved range of motion. Conclusion The absolute contraindications to arthroscopic shoulder stabilization are decreasing every day. We believe that significant humeral head defects and sizable glenoid bone loss remain the only definitive indications for open surgery.

Do arthroscopic and open stabilization techniques restore equivalent stability to the shoulder in the setting of anterior glenohumeral instability? a systematic review of overlapping meta-analyses.

PURPOSE Shoulder instability frequently recurs in young patients without operative treatment. Both open and arthroscopic approaches to shoulder stabilization with labral repair and capsulorrhaphy have been described and are routinely used. Multiple trials have been conducted to compare these approaches, with multiple meta-analyses performed to synthesize these trials; however, the results remai...

Trends in Shoulder Stabilization Techniques Used in the United States Based on a Large Private-Payer Database

Background Arthroscopic stabilization is the most broadly used surgical procedure in the United States for management of recurrent shoulder instability. Latarjet coracoid transfer has been considered a salvage surgical procedure for failed arthroscopic repairs or cases of significant glenoid bone loss; however, with recent literature suggesting reduced risk of recurrent instability with Latarje...

The Influence of Evidence-Based Surgical Indications and Techniques on Failure Rates After Arthroscopic Shoulder Stabilization in the Contact or Collision Athlete With Anterior Shoulder Instability.

BACKGROUND It has been reported that arthroscopic shoulder stabilization yields higher rates of failure in contact or collision athletes as compared with open shoulder stabilization; however, this is largely based upon studies that do not employ modern, evidence-based surgical indications and techniques for arthroscopic shoulder stabilization. PURPOSE To (1) determine the pooled failure rate ...

Trends in Surgical Management of Shoulder Instability

BACKGROUND Optimal surgical management of anterior shoulder instability remains controversial. There is a need to assess the most recent trends for primary and revision shoulder stabilization surgery using a national database significantly larger than those previously utilized. HYPOTHESIS Most shoulder stabilization procedures are performed arthroscopically. Examining revision procedures, we ...

Controversies in the Surgical Management of Shoulder Instability: Open vs Arthroscopic Procedures

BACKGROUND Traumatic anterior instability of the shoulder is a common condition associated with a high recurrence rate in young adults. Operative treatment reduces the risk of recurrence. Several studies have compared arthroscopic and open shoulder instability repair. The purpose of this paper is to perform a review of the literature where both techniques are compared in the repair of the anter...
